Ann Marie's Story
My name is Annmarie. I started fighting the battle of the bulge in the early 90`s when I was in my mid 20`s. I had just gotten married and we fell into the habit of going out to dinner a lot. This was not the norm for me as I was raised in an Italian family who had home cooked meals every night and going out to dinner or even ordering pizza was a "special" night. I noticed after 3 children, eating out frequently and hitting what was now my early 30`s, I was no longer a slender and fit person. I was now pushing up to 200 lbs. and a size 14. I made all those internal promises we make to ourselves, "I will have this last piece of cake and start my diet on Mon., after Christmas, or when I come back from vacation." You know what I mean. As I felt worse and worse physically and mentally I decided to try things on my own, such as a few diet plans etc. I would drop some and increase more. I hated fall because I would see how tight my pants would be after a summer of eating badly. I had had enough, but really didn't know how to tackle this problem. I happened to be reading an article in a magazine about this woman, Berta Prevosti, and her "Just Lose It" approach to weight loss and feeling better. I kept her article and was going to contact her. Unfortunately, I was sidelined with cancer in. 2008 and my weight loss battle took a back seat to a lifesaving one. Thankfully, 2 years later I was cancer free, but beat up pretty bad. I had ballooned to almost 220lbs, my all time high, a size 16 and mentally drained. At that moment I said it was time to do something.
As fate would have it my monthly magazine that initially had Berta`s information in it showed up and lo and behold she was featured again only this time in a singles discussion. At the end it said she was what I would describe a life coach. I never had met her or knew of her credentials. I never asked around about her, I just felt this person was going to help me... I could feel it. So after some searching I was able to speak to her and begged her to fit me into her busy schedule. She had started a weight loss group with 5 other people. We met once a week and discussed all of our struggles regarding weight loss, with Berta always offering her insight as to what works and doesn't, what to eat and what not to eat with the research to back it up.
This group changed my life. After 3 years and a 40 lb weight lost I left the group to lose the last of my weight (20lbs). I left because I felt I had the tools and knowledge to continue on my own. Thanks to Berta and my group friends I learned a lot about myself and why I eat the way I do. I would be lying if I said this journey has been easy, But it has not. I have laughed, lied, denied and cried. I will reach my goal with Berta`s continued guidance, as I now see her weekly for Reiki and speak to her when things are tough and I need to be refocused.
This journey has taught me that there is no quick fix to lose weight, no magic pill or diet. You need to take care of what is causing you to eat, the mental battle, before you will lose the physical weight. With Berta's guidance I am on the right track. I am not perfect and don't expect to be. I am in a daily battle of eating right, but I feel better than I have in years.
